Due to the reduction of the limiting value of arsenic to 0.01 mg l−1 in both the EU guideline and the German drinking water standard, As in drinking water has become more important for the last years. In this paper, various possibilities for the removal of arsenic from groundwater are discussed. Results of research into As removal from a Saxon groundwater by the Dresden University of Technology are shown. Included in the paper is a comparison of costs of three tested techniques as well as an economic comparison with other research in the literature. Also, considerations regarding economic methods of supply, specifically long-distance water supply instead of the use of local, arsenic-contaminated resources, are made.
