This chapter presents the different types of hydraulic and mass loading rates, and how to calculate and interpret them. Loading rates are used for the design of treatment units and for experimental studies that aim to investigate treatment performance under different loading conditions. In existing plants, knowledge of the applied loading rates assists in the understanding of the behaviour of the treatment units. This chapter will help you to understand the concept and the physical meaning of the different types of hydraulic and mass loading rates.
