Cities around the world are struggling with water management in the face of climate change and extreme events. To combat this, we are using blue-green infrastructure planning. This involves combining an urban block approach for stormwater management with irrigation demands during dry summer months. We are implementing practical infrastructure planning for the refurbishment of municipal housing. In a network of researchers and city partners such as water utilities and a municipal housing company, we co-designed blue-green scenarios for the city of Leipzig (Germany). The co-designed water infrastructure scenarios were calculated using stormwater and irrigation demand modelling. The results show that more than 90% of a 100-year stormwater event can be retained and that courtyard irrigation can be largely covered by roof runoff under different climatic conditions.
