H2Open Journal Special Issue on
Integrated Urban Water Management in Sponge Cities
CALL FOR PAPERS
The concept of sponge cities, which emerged in 2013, has gained wide attention in the international water management community. It is similar to low impact development, sustainable drainage systems and water sensitive cities developed and practiced in other countries such as the US, UK and Australian, as it advocates the use of a combination of grey, green, and blue infrastructure systems to manage urban stormwater, minimise the impact caused by urban development to the natural hydrological cycle and water ecological environment, and achieve multiple goals such as water security , flood management, water quality improvement, and aquatic ecosystem rehabilitation. In the past 10 years, China has carried out pilot projects and practices for sponge city construction nationwide, and conducted a large number of experiments, monitoring, modelling and policy studies. Further, some unique challenges are emerging from sponge city research and development.
Therefore, this Special Issue is devoted to being the premier platform for the publication of world-leading and high-impact research in the field of integrated urban water management in sponge cities. It aims to scientifically collating and systematically reporting the 10-year research and development of sponge cities and future challenges that will not only promote the improvement of relevant theories, models and technologies, but also enhance the practical implementation of integrated urban water management.
We are pleased to invite you to submit a manuscript to H2Open Journal for peer review and possible publication in a Special Issue entitled ‘Integrated Urban Water Management in Sponge Cities’.
Relevant topics include:
All manuscripts addressing the theories, methods, technologies, experiments, monitoring, modelling and case studies related to sponge cities or low impact development are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Complex hydrological, hydraulic, and water quality processes: urban flooding, runoff pollution, evapotranspiration and urban heat island, groundwater recharge, urban hydrological cycle
- Planning, design and maintenance of various sponge city or low impact development measures: rainwater harvesting, permeable pavement, swale, bioretention basin, green roof, aquatic ecosystem rehabilitation
- Sponge city sensing and smart operation: sensor design and deployment, cyber system design, data processing, data analytics
- Modelling and optimisation: model development, artificial intelligence, life cycle analysis, multi-benefits, net-zero emissions
- Community building and social resilience: emergency planning, community resilience, social justice, flood insurance
Key dates:
Deadline for manuscript submission: 31st October 2024
Expected publication: Papers will be published online as soon as possible after acceptance
