Call for Papers:

IWA Publishing is pleased to invite submissions to a cross-journal Special Issue on Flooding: Causes, Consequences, and Responses.

Flooding is one of the most widespread and devastating natural hazards worldwide, with far-reaching impacts on human health, infrastructure, economies, ecosystems, and water quality. Its effects span from immediate loss of life and property to long-term environmental degradation and social disruption. As climate change, land use changes, and urban development intensify flood risks and increase the frequency and severity of extreme events, comprehensive and interdisciplinary research into all aspects of flooding has never been more critical. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated understanding of flood dynamics, innovative prediction methods, effective management strategies, and a deep awareness of the environmental and societal implications of flooding.

This Special Issue seeks to showcase the breadth of research addressing the causes, consequences, and responses to flooding in diverse contexts around the world. We welcome contributions that explore novel approaches, tools, and solutions for flood prediction, preparedness, response, and recovery. In particular, we encourage submissions that highlight the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, advanced hydrological modelling, water quality impacts following flood events, and the design and evaluation of flood intervention and management strategies.

We welcome submissions of the latest results, project findings, and perspectives from researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • AI and machine learning applications in flood forecasting and management
  • Innovations in flood hydrological modelling
  • Water quality monitoring and assessment post-flooding
  • Flood preparedness and interventions, including resilient water and sanitation services, stormwater management, and adaptive infrastructure design (e.g., sponge cities)
