Journal of Water & Health Special Issue on
Antibiotic Resistance and Water Environments
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Journal of Water & Health will publish a special issue entitled “Antibiotic Resistance and Water Environments” in 2020.
The objective of this special issue is to gather original and high-quality studies related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in water environments. This special issue focuses on any area covered in the AMR and water environment topics, which includes, but is not limited to:
-
Overview of AMR in water environments;
-
Overview of WASH interventions to combat AMR and existing WHO activities;
-
Risk assessment of AMR in water environments;
-
AMR gene transfer in water environments;
-
Environmental sources and pathways of AMR;
-
Relative contribution of WASH versus livestock/food and human/health care.

Rationale of the Issue
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been raised as important for the international agenda. AMR is not only a major threat to global health, but also our future economy. Worldwide, more than 700,000 deaths are annually linked to AMR agents. While the relative role of the environment is unclear at this stage, an important first step is to identify hotspots of AMR spread and human exposure, and to explore (model) possible benefits of actions to cut/reduce the load of AMR agents into environmental compartments. This special issue is designed to gather cutting-edge knowledge on the potential contribution of the environment to the spread of AMR agents, by evaluating the status of knowledge on the relationship between AMR and the water environment. This issue aims to disseminate recent information on AMR and water environments to academics and those involved with current WHO and National Action Plans for AMR, and to aid in identifying effective practices of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) on AMR.
