Call for Papers:

Water Reuse is pleased to invite submissions for peer review and possible publication in the ‘Potable Water Reuse: Progress, Challenges, and Implementation’ Special Issue.

Development of new drinking water supplies continues to be a worldwide challenge in the twenty-first century. Potable water reuse is one solution for this challenge and is being implemented or considered in regions where supply is decreasing due to droughts and changing climate (e.g., Southwestern United States (US) and Western Australia); where population is growing or urbanizing (e.g., sub-Saharan Africa); where industry is developing/advancing (e.g., Asia-Pacific), and where demand for agricultural irrigation is increasing (e.g., Spain). Potable water reuse may also play a role in other regions where natural water resources are naturally limited due to arid climates (e.g., Middle East and North Africa). This offers a local water supply that is drought resilient but can be limited by challenges and constraints.

Curated by Amy Childress (University of Southern California, USA), Stuart Khan (University of Sydney, Australia) and Yun Lu (Tsinghua University, China), the ‘Potable Water Reuse: Progress, Challenges, and Implementation’ Special Issue will consider potable water reuse from an international perspective. Topics of potable water reuse in indirect and direct municipal/urban scenarios including technology innovation, risk management, system integration, regulatory aspects, and public perception will be included.

We welcome submissions of latest results, project findings, and perspectives from researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.

Relevant topics include: indirect and direct municipal/urban scenarios; technology innovation, risk management, system integration, regulatory aspects, and public perception

How to submit:

Please make sure that your paper follows the Instructions for Authors, before submitting your paper directly to Water Reuse via https://www.editorialmanager.com/wreuse. Please choose the most appropriate article type and the submission category 'Special Issue: Potable Water Reuse' on submission.

About the Guest Editors:

Amy Childress, PhD, University of Southern California, USA

Amy Childress is Dean’s Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the ReWater Center (Center for Water Reuse and Resource Recovery) at the University of Southern California. Her research and scholarly interests are in the areas of wastewater reuse and desalination to address the global challenge of freshwater scarcity. Most recently, Professor Childress has investigated membrane processes for innovative solutions to contaminant and energy challenges; conceptual analyses of synergistic configurations of shared/integrated facilities; interfacial and mechanical aspects of membrane materials; and brine reduction and energy recovery. Professor Childress has served as co-editor-in-chief of Water Reuse, published by IWA Publishing, since 2024.

Stuart Khan, PhD, University of Sydney, Australia

Stuart Khan is a Professor and Head of School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney. He has published over 200 peer reviewed journal articles on issues relating to water quality and treatment, including drinking water, wastewater, recreational water, environmental water systems, water recycling and desalination. Stuart is a Fellow of scientific and engineering institutions, including Engineers Australia (FIEAust), The Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE), The Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), The Royal Society of NSW (FRSN), and is an International Water Association IWA Fellow.

Yun Lu, PhD, Tsinghua University, China

Yun Lu is an Associate Professor in the Division of Environmental Health, School of Environment at Tsinghua University, China. His research focuses on environmental toxicology, pathogenic organisms, disinfection technology, and health risk assessment. Dr Lu has served as an Associate Editor in Chief of Water Reuse, published by IWA Publishing, since 2025.

About Water Reuse:

Published by IWA Publishing, part of the International Water Association, Water Reuse focuses on all aspects of the treatment and use of non-conventional water resources.
