How to Submit
Articles should be uploaded to our online submission site and must comply with the Instructions for Authors (iwaponline.com/pages/Instructions_for_authors). Please ensure you have read the Instructions for Authors before submitting.
Once you have decided which journal is the most appropriate for your research, you can submit to the journal of your choice, by clicking on the relevant journal cover below. This will take you to the Editorial Manager page for that journal. These links are also repeated in plain text at the bottom of this page.

There are additional instructions on how to submit a paper through Editorial Manager within the submission system.
To submit your article through our website (iwaponline.com), you will need to find the 'Submit to this Journal' button on the right-hand side of the individual journal's homepage.
Choosing a Journal
To ensure that you are submitting your paper to the most appropriate journal, you should first check the Aims & Scope for that journal. The links to the Aims & Scopes can be found at the bottom of this page or on the individual journal homepages on our website.
Submission Checklist
The following list will be useful during the final checking of an article prior to sending it to the journal for review. Please consult the Instructions for Authors (iwaponline.com/pages/Instructions_for_authors) for further details of any item.
Ensure that the following items are present:
One author has been designated as the Corresponding Author with contact details.
- Email address
- Full affiliation details. If you qualify for a Research4Life/EIFL waiver, please read through the following page to ensure that the waiver is automatically applied upon acceptance: iwaponline.com/open_access/pages/research4life_guidelines.
- All co-author institutional email addresses for verification
- A full list of author attributions, defining how each author contributed to the work, is encouraged
All necessary files have been uploaded, and contain:
- Manuscript file
- Keywords
- All figures with figure legends
- All tables (including title, description, footnotes)
Further considerations:
- Manuscript has been spell- and grammar-checked
- All references mentioned in the Reference list are cited in the text, and vice versa
- Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the internet)
- The co-authors that are listed in Editorial Manager match the co-authors listed on the manuscript
Peer Review Process
All papers that an Editor sends for review will be peer reviewed by a minimum of two independent reviewers. You can see the full process here: iwaponline.com/pages/peer_review. More information on how to review a paper can be found here: iwaponline.com/pages/how_to_review_a_paper.
Reviewers
You may be required to submit, with the manuscript, the names and details of 3-5 potential Reviewers that can give an independent review. These details are outlined below. Please note that it is at the Editor’s discretion to invite suggested Reviewers.
- Full name and title
- Current post or institutional affiliation – web link if possible
- Work email address (rather than a personal address)
- Country the reviewer is based in
- Reason for proposing this Reviewer
You should make sure that suggested Reviewers are not within your institution and have a wide geographic distribution (i.e. not just from your country of origin). They should have specific expertise in the subject area of the manuscript and should not have any conflicts of interest. Examples of conflicts of interest can be found on our ‘How to Review a Paper’ page: iwaponline.com/pages/how_to_review_a_paper.
Revision
Major corrections cannot be undertaken by either the Editor or the publishers; if your paper is not prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors, it may not be considered further.
Where requested to do so in the course of the peer review process, authors must revise their papers within one month of the request, otherwise the contribution will be considered withdrawn.
When uploading your revision in the system, please ensure that you include the following files:
- Individual Figure Files – to streamline the Production process if the paper is accepted, please provide source files of your figures on revision.
- Response to Reviewers – this is a list of the changes made according to the reviewers’ comments. It is usually organised by first showing the individual reviewers’ comments, followed by the authors’ response to each of these comments. Please detail why or why not you have made the changes recommended by the Editor and Reviewers.
- Tracked Changes Version of Revised Manuscript – please include a copy of the manuscript that shows the changes made to your revised article as a separate document.
- Clean Copy of Revised Manuscript – as well as the tracked changes version, please include a version of your manuscript with tracked changes turned off, for readability.
- Graphical Abstract (if requested by Editor): This should offer readers an at-a-glance visualisation of your paper via a single, concise image.
