Institutional support for IWA Publishing and S2O

Global institutional support is key to sustainable open access delivery of IWA Publishing’s portfolio of water research journals. More than 7,600 research papers have been published open access, since 2021. Downloads from IWA Publishing journals more than doubled with the move to open access.

IWA Publishing delivers institutions a suite of journals encompassing the entire water sector for authors to publish in. The journals address the prevalent themes in water across water supply, wastewater, health and policy. All the key developments are covered, including digital water and climate change.

The portfolio is compliant with the mandates of major funders including OSTP, NIH, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, HHMI, UKRI, and the European Commission. IWA Publishing’s open access commitment is endorsed by OA2020 and cOAlition S.

Institutions achieve impact when their authors publish. The journals are internationally recognised, in tune with research trends and the search for real world solutions.

In support of global access to science, IWA Publishing encourages researchers from low-income countries to submit their papers. These authors benefit from generous waiver policies.

Authors from institutions that haven’t yet signed up to support IWA Publishing’s open access publishing and who aren’t eligible for a waiver are asked to pay an APC (Article Processing Charge). These payments support peer review, quality assurance, research integrity and open access publication. Typically, it makes both economic and academic sense for institutions active in the water research sector to join as S2O supporting partners.

Authors at institutions that participate in IWA Publishing’s S2O model publish free of charge, with no ceiling on the number of articles that they can submit or publish. They can access a research archive dating back to 1966 which includes seminal water research and can elect to include the IWA Publishing extensive eBooks collection at concessionary rates.
