The decision variables were the number of pumping units in the pump station, their capacity in kilowatts, and the hourly pump status over 24 h. The pumps were assumed to be identical. In the Apulian network, the pump capacity was selected from the commercial pump capacities given in Table 1, while the corresponding pump characteristics curve is presented in Figure 3. The commercial pump capacities ranged from 0.1 to 5.2 kW in the Net2 network. A maximum of 10 pumping units could be installed in the pump station.
