Call for Associate Editors


The Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Development are looking for Associate Editors to add to their team of internationally-renowned subject experts.


JWASHdev has an Impact Factor of 1.786 and CiteScore of 2.2.It publishes original, peer-reviewed, internationally relevant articles l devoted to the dissemination of high-quality information on the science, policy and practice of drinking-water supply, sanitation and hygiene at local, national and international levels. The journal is fully Open Access through our Subscribe to Open scheme. See the Aims and Scope here:


The Associate Editors use our online peer-review system, Editorial Manager, to progress submissions by selecting reviewers and informing authors of editorial and publishing decisions. In addition, they contribute to policy decisions regarding the future direction of the journal, help acquire new material and encourage high-quality submissions.


Applicants should have:

  • An interest in developments with an international scope;
  • Great organisation, time management and communication skills;
  • A dedication to the role of Associate Editor and the time commitment it entails; and
  • An established record of work and scholarship in relevant scientific field(s); expertise in the following fields are particularly sought:
    • Emerging Issues, Emergencies and Disasters;
    • Environmental Sanitation Planning;
    • Equity and Inclusion;
    • Finance Pricing, tariff and subsidies;
    • Impacts and Impact Evaluation;
    • Institutional Development;
    • International Policy;
    • International Rights and Aid Costing, Economic Evaluation and Analysis;
    • Management;
    • Sanitation Behaviour Change;
    • Sanitation Infrastructure and Systems;
    • Sustainability;
    • WASH and other Sectors (including health and education);
    • Water Quality;
    • Water Treatment;


Other qualities that are desirable:

  • Existing editorial experience, particularly with online peer-review systems;
  • Previous service and contribution to Journal of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Development, i.e. being an author or reviewer;
  • Membership to the International Water Association (IWA); and
  • Association or institutional awards.

Priority will be given to candidates from lower and middle-income countries.
