Abstract: Leakage is one of the most important drivers for rehabilitation. Excess flow leads to low pressures, poor reliability and high operating costs. The project undertaken in the city of Lucca in central Italy demonstrates how it is possible to design and create a permanent leakage and pressure control system in an old and complex water network. It is estimated that when the project is completed, the saving will be in excess of 2 million m3/ year. This will allow the closure of 75% of the boreholes which will significantly reduce the environmental impact resulting from the over exploitation of the aquifer. The projected annual economic saving is estimated to be €250,000.
