Spatial distribution of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that implements an anaerobic/anoxic/Oxic (A2O) process is investigated for the purpose of optimizing the horizontal and vertical locations of DO sensors so as to facilitate comprehensive understanding of the DO spatial distribution in the tank through measurements from sensors, and to reduce time delay between airflow changes and the response of aeration tanks. This paper presents two parameters, DO Kinetic index (DK) and DO Deviation index (DD), to facilitate quantitative evaluation of DO control performance. DK and DD can be directly used as a part of real-time DO control strategy in large scale WWTPs.
