As key projects within the rehabilitation of the rivers Emscher and Seseke, EMSCHERGENOSSENSCHAFT and LIPPEVERBAND constructed new WWTPs in Bottrop (1995) and Kamen-Koernebach (1998), which operate with biological nutrient removal using cascade nitrification/denitrification and a UCT scheme for biologically enhanced phosphorus removal. During the 15 years after the design, the load conditions, operational parameters and material costs (chemicals, electric power) changed. Still, the basic system decisions proved to be reliable. Anaerobic tank volumes also reduce the total nitrogen effluents. Investments in separate reject water treatment from sludge dewatering could be postponed by at least 15 years.
