Abstract

The primary function of an aeration tank is to provide sufficient time, and a suitable environment for the assimilation of organics by micro-organisms. Initally assimilation occurs by a rapid absorption or adsorption process. After this initial contact-phenomena between the waste and micro-organisms, the biochemical reactions predominate, but at a decreased rate of organic removal. In any event the extent of treatment may be related to the retention period in the aerator.
