In many ocean dumping cases, settleable solids are introduced at the sea surface, fall through the water column, and come to rest on the sea bed a significant horizontal distance from the dump point. Classical stream sedimentation analysis is extended to the case of net downward sediment flux to describe three regimes of particle settling: (a) unaffected by turbulence, (b) influenced by turbulence, (c) dominated by turbulent diffusion. A procedure for computing particle trajectories is presented.
