An anaerobic filter and the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process were modified to develop a feasible alternative anaerobic wastewater treatment method. Polypropylene rings were used in the reactor as the floating media to maximize solids retention time (SRT), even at short hydraulic retention time (HRT). Clogging and plugging problems were solved by fluidizing the media with the biogas produced in the reactor. The mechanisms and applicability of the modified process were evaluated using artificial wastewater composed of glucose and non-fat dry milk at a level of 500-2,000 mg/l total chemical oxygen demand (T-COD).
