A mixture of condensate and caustic extraction liquor from a dissolving pulp mill was treated anaerobically in a pilot plant. The results showed that caustic extraction liquor could be used for pH control, and thus no chemicals were needed for this purpose. No toxic effects could be seen if the flow of caustic extraction liquor was kept in the range of 25-30% of the total flow. The anaerobic COD reduction averaged about 50% and the corresponding BOD reduction varied in the range 70-80%.
