The Göttingen Boat is a new tool to measure sediment height and water depth in urban sewers without impeding their normal operation. The boat permits measurements in sewers of cross-section ranging from 0.70 m to 2.00 m and of 5 km of sewer per working day. The data acquisition is computer controlled. The results give information about where and how much sediment is in the sewer. Thus cleaning campaigns can be confined to these regions, which can help to save cleaning costs. The water height data give information about the structural condition of the sewer, in particular where the sewer sags.
