Micromanipulation of branching actinomycete filaments from activated sludge foams resulted in the isolation of pure cultures identified as belonging to the genera Nocardia, Rhodococcus and Mycobacterium. The adequacy of microscopic examination alone in determining the organism(s) responsible for foam formation is questioned.
