The paper describes the development and subsequent management of a central database of operational information based largely on the automated processing of time series data retrieved from the Company's telemetry control systems.

Following the implementation of the system, both the quality and quantity of processed statistics available to operational managers has been greatly enhanced above the level of information originally recorded by manual methods. Also significant process modelling systems have been introduced utilising this information to improve operational efficiency.

Key to the success of the system has been the comprehensive provision of facilities to quickly and effectively validate the data, together with the facilities provided to ensure that the configuration of the database accurately matches and tracks configuration changes to the field network. The paper examines these functions in some detail.
