This paper is a case history on the benefits the city of Indianapolis has been able to realize from incorporating an enterprise-wide model for approaching automation at their two Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) Plants. Emphasized is the importance of strategic planning, performance measures and human factors associated with the suggested implementation of applied technology. Also discussed are the results, thus far, with the implemented portions of the plan. A framework is summarized for other municipalities to use as a guide to applying virtually any automation technology.
