The objective of this study is to determine the environmental risks caused by inland water transport. A method has been developed to determine the accident-rate with environmental-hazardous goods during transportation over water, and to estimate the effects (risks) of such accidents on the environment. With the results of the study the present environmental risks of inland water transport are evaluated, as well as some proposed measures, intended to improve safety. It turns out that accidents upstream of Lobith dominate the environmental Immission risks at the Dutch region of the river Rhine. A comparison with static industrial plants is still subject of further study.
