Cytopathogenic viruses have been found in two Austrian rivers, in which hydroelectric power stations are being built or are already in existence. Very rarely viruses have been found in the sediments of these rivers, though the applied method yielded a virus recovery rate of 58%. In the aquifers viruses could be found only in one well. These results suggest a rather efficient selfpurifying capacity in both highly oxygenated rivers.
