An optimisation program was carried out at Sydney Water Quakers Hill sewage treatment plant to determine the nitrification and denitrification capacity of the Intermittently Decanted Aerated Lagoon. The program involved changing the IDAL selectors from aerobic to anoxic, implementing aeration control and various process control strategies, and stress testing the plant. The results indicated that anoxic selector and good aeration control improved denitrification, and innovative process control increased capacity. It was demenostrated that IDALs have 33 percent excess capacity.
