The World Water Council was created in to act as the international water policy think-tank and can thus play a central role in defining the water challenges for the 21st century and the routes to their solution. This article outlines the origins of the Council and the major steps undertaken since its foundation in 1996, inluding contributions to the various World Water Forums, the World Water Vision and other agenda-setting international meetings.
