A brief history of Hamburg's sludge disposal methods, including sea disposal, and centrifuging lime treatment before landfill is given. The latter process has been an interim measure since sea disposal was prevented in 1983 and the installation of a permanent plant is planned for 1990. This will incorporate heated sludge drying using digester gas and some trials of two different dryers and the financial and practical bases for the decision are discussed in the paper.
