Different types of households can be distinguished but as all households consume, they all contribute to the pollution of domestic waste water. The consumption of households is liable to changes, which lead to the problem definition of this paper: What are the influences of household characteristics and changes in consumption on the pollution of domestic waste water in terms of oxygen demand? To answer this question a literature research was conducted by which data from different research fields is collected, analysed and integrated. The factors that influence the oxygen demand of domestic waste water can be divided into personal and household factors. The results of this survey show that the personal factor, and especially physiological waste products, is most important, as it accounts for 60% of the oxygen demand of domestic waste water. This factor also contributes most of the changes of oxygen demand of domestic waste water, while behaviour and demographics have little effect.
