Water Science and Technology Special Issue on
Water Resource Recovery Modelling (WRRmod24)
CALL FOR PAPERS
We are excited to announce a Call for Papers for a Special Issue on Water Resource Recovery Modelling in Water Science & Technology. This Special Issue is based on discussions and presentations from the 9th Water Resource Recovery Modelling Seminar, which was held at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA.
The seminar offered a unique platform for professionals in the wastewater treatment industry to showcase the latest advancements in MABR modeling assessment, CFD and compartmental models, twins, hybrids, and data. Other topics included low-energy nitrogen removal, modeling new populations to improve nutrient removal prediction, and physics-informing biological design. The seminar underscored the significance of developing and implementing best practices in WRRF models to address some of the most urgent environmental challenges.
The workshops covered a range of areas, including decentralized system modeling, evaluation of the hybrid modeling competition, utility perspectives on digital twins as operational tools, hydrolysis models for influent soft sensors, continuous flow granulation/densified activated sludge modeling, and N2O modeling.
Everybody is invited to submit a paper, especially all participants of the WRRmod2024 conference. We are eager to receive your submissions and showcase the most promising model developments in this special issue.

Submissions should address the conference themes and how the contribution advances modeling in one of the following key topic areas:
- Modeling for operations
- Implementing models for planning and design
- Mechanistic model development
- Application of models for fundamental research and knowledge development
- Data management for modeling and digital twins
- Data-driven modeling, artificial intelligence, and hybrid modeling
Key dates:
Deadline for manuscript submission: December 10th, 2024
Expected publication: Articles will be published online as soon as possible after acceptance.
Guest Editors:
Fabrizio Sabba, Black & Veatch, USA
Nerea Uri Carreño, VandCenter Syd, Denmark
Giacomo Bellandi, AM-Team, Belgium
How to submit:
Please make sure that your paper follows the Instructions to Authors, before submitting your paper directly to Water Science and Technology’s peer review system, choosing the article type – ‘Special Issue Article OA’ and the submission category – ‘Special Issue: Water Resource Recovery Modelling’. This will send your paper to one of the Guest Editors.
