Water Science & Technology Special Issue on

AOPs for Contaminants of Emerging Concern




Generally, conventional water treatment approaches are effective at removing contaminants of emerging concern satisfactorily; however, these can be sometimes chemically, energetically, and operationally intensive. In this context, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as sustainable technologies for stopping pollutants from reaching the environment, offering different solutions to many environmental problems. This Special Issue will cover novel nanomaterials, novel processes and new concepts which can be applied to stop recalcitrant pollutants from reaching the environment, focusing on real matrices, including groundwater, surface water, and wastewater. This Special Issue will cover the following themes: i) application of novel materials through AOPs of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) removal in realistic matrices, ii) advanced oxidation processes for remediation of realistic matrices, iii) water splitting into green hydrogen, iv) electrochemical oxidation and anodic oxidation processes, v) scale-up design for AOPs, vi) applications using new illumination sources, vii) process integration and viii) process intensification and techno-economics. Papers dealing with novel AOPs for the synthesis of organic and inorganic species should anticipate a real industrial revolution in the very near future. Additionally, the use of AOPs-assisted environmental treatments is also gaining attention because they can raise the sustainability of conventional treatments if properly powered with renewable sources.

We are pleased to invite you to submit a manuscript to Water Science & Technology for peer review and possible publication in a Special Issue entitled AOPs for Contaminants of Emerging Concern.

  • Integrated AOPs with electrochemical advanced oxidation processes;
  • Sustainable hybrid approaches of AOPs;
  • Application of new materials in AOPs;
  • Environmental sustainability of AOPs through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA);
  • Scale-up design for AOPs;
  • Degradation mechanisms of CECs to CO2 and H2O;
  • Modelling, optimization and techno-economic analysis.


Key dates:

Deadline for manuscript submission: October 1st, 2022.

Expected publication: January 1st, 2023. Accepted papers will be published online as soon as possible after acceptance.
