Water Science & Technology Special Issue on

Design, Operation and Economics of Large Wastewater Treatment Plants

IWA Specialist Group on Design, Operation and Costs of Large Wastewater Treatment Plants, is pleased to announce this Special Issue with WST, which aims to find proper solutions for problems related to design, operation and economics of large wastewater treatment plants (LWWTP). This Special Issue also celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the LWWTP Conference, which was first held in Vienna in 1971.

At the beginning of the 20th century less than 15% of the total population of the world lived in towns, with future projections that by 2050 two thirds of the entire population will be living in the urban areas. Therefore, wastewater treatment in large treatment plants is an inseparable part of water management in cities of the future. The operation of LWWTPs is considered a valuable source of making wastewater available for other purposes, including water, energy, and nutrients.
